چکیده

Purpose: A trace element supplementation strategy previously shown to be effective in mesophilic conditions was tested for thermophilic digestion of source segregated domestic food waste. Method: Inoculum from a mesophilic anaerobic digester treating municipal wastewater biosolids was successfully acclimated to thermophilic temperature (55 o C) with food waste as a substrate. Four laboratory-scale digesters were maintained at a loading of 2 g VS l-1 day-1 with one pair receiving trace elements (TE) supplementation. Two more pairs of digesters were incrementally loaded to 3 and 4 g VS l-1 day-1 , respectively, and also received TE. Results: All digesters performed well for the first 3-4 months of operation, but volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations in those without TE showed no recovery from an initial small accumulation. On continued operation, VFA concentrations increased in all digesters, especially those at higher loading rates or without TE supplementation, reaching >30 g l-1. Under these meta-stable conditions, a deliberate disturbance to daily feeding (cessation then resumption) led to acetic acid accumulation, a fall in pH and a sharp increase in the ratio of partial to intermediate alkalinity. Increases in VFA corresponded to an increasing total ammonia nitrogen concentration which appeared to become inhibitory at ~2500 mg N l-1. Conclusions: While TE supplementation delayed the onset and reduced the rate of VFA accumulation, it was unable to sustain stable digestion of this substrate in thermophilic conditions. 1 Introduction Anaerobic digestion is the degradation of organic material in the absence of oxygen to produce biogas (a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide and trace amounts of other gases), and a residual stabilised digestate. The process is becoming a popular technology because of its ability to produce renewable energy from a wide variety of organic wastes from municipal, agricultural and industrial sources, while allowing nutrient recovery through application of the digestate to land. The European Landfill directive (99/31/EC), which requires the diversion of biodegradable municipal waste from landfill, has led to a growing number of schemes for the collection of source segregated food waste from domestic and commercial properties. Early digestion trials with this material, however, showed accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFA) over extended run times in both mesophilic and thermophilic digestion systems [1]. Similar observations were made in a full-scale thermophilic digester treating source segregated restaurant and catering waste [2], and in the UK Government's food waste demonstration AD plant in Ludlow, UK [3]; and have also …

Optimization of Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Winery Bio-waste by Micro-nutrients Augmentation

Thermophilic anaerobic digestion is a suitable technology to treat agricultural waste because of its higher biogas production, hygienisation effect and solids removal efficiency. Although these benefits, poor effluent quality and instability are encountered in some cases. The anaerobic co-digestion of winery waste and waste activated sludge at 55°C, operating at 23 days HRT and with an organic ...

Application of anaerobic digestion products of municipal solid food wastes in treating wastewaters

Anaerobic digestion is the breakdown of biodegradable organic material by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen or in an oxygen-starved environment. This technology is superior to the landfilling and also the aerobic composting. The aim of the present study was to examine whether the effluent Volatile Fatty Acids from the anaerobic acidogenesis of the food waste can be used du to its high valu...

Anaerobic Codigestion of Sludge: Addition of Butcher's Fat Waste as a Cosubstrate for Increasing Biogas Production.

Fat waste discarded from butcheries was used as a cosubstrate in the anaerobic codigestion of sewage sludge (SS). The process was evaluated under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. The codigestion was successfully attained despite some inhibitory stages initially present that had their origin in the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and adsorption of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA)....

Operators Briefing Note – Anaerobic Digestion Operators Guidance Note – Effective Digestion of Food Waste

2.0 What are the challenges? There are two groups of ‘biogas generating’ organisms available within an Anaerobic Digestion process: acetoclastic methanogens and hydrogenotrophic methanogens. Food waste has a high nitrogen content due to the high protein component. During anaerobic digestion this generates a high level of ammonia which is toxic to the acetoclastic methanogens. Whilst biogas prod...
